Arnaz played psychologist Dr Jane Lucas, who dispensed advice on a radio call-in show for WPLE-AM (nicknamed “Advice Radio 88”) called The Love and Lucas Show – “Your spot for music and mental health in the afternoon”.
The show combined the psychological advice of Dr Lucas with the comic talents of Larry Love (Todd Waring) and his invisible dog, Tippy.
The radio station was located in Manhattan at 1700 Broadway (at 53rd Street) and 555-WPLE was the advice line phone number.
31-year-old Jane also juggled a private practice and a freelance writing gig with a daily advice column in the Daily Mirror called “Dear Jane”.
Jane (a graduate from New York University) lived in Apartment 4A on East 70th Street. She played shortstop on the station’s unnamed softball team.
Other characters included station manager Jim Gordon (Tony Roberts), Jane’s sister Jill (Lee Bryant) and Jill’s children, Sarah (Melissa Joan Hart) and Billy (Sandy Schwartz).
Originally premiered in the US on 2 April 1985, the series was based on the British series, Agony (starring Maureen Lipman as Jane Lucas, a newspaper advice columnist).
