Debbie Gates – the creator of Tales From Fat Tulip’s Garden – co-wrote this series of six stories for children with Ben Keaton, who also narrated and voiced all the characters in his TV debut as he worked his way around Gumtree House.
Each of the stories took place in a different room of the ramshackle house which had been built over a hundred years ago by Mr Rosemary Olivetti Ratchett. There was now only one person living in the house – the eccentric Professor Pierre McDonald (who had spent 10 years living in a laundry basket on the second floor).
Gumtree debuted on Channel 4 on 25 February 1988.
