Peter Farrell (Daniel Hugh Kelly), an architect with the firm of Hughes, Whitney and Lennox, lives at 46 La Paloma Drive in Los Angeles with his children Kate (Juliette Lewis) and Will (Jason Horst).
When his wife leaves him, Peter hires Dora Calderon (Elizabeth Peña), a young woman from El Salvador, as his housekeeper. Several months later, when Dora’s visa is about to expire, Peter marries her to prevent her deportation and allow her to remain in the country with his family.
Peter claims he and Dora are not really married and are free agents when it comes to dating. Dora agrees that they have a marriage of convenience (although she secretly loves “Mr Peter”) and asks simply “If our marriage is going to work you can’t sneak around with other women. You have to bring them home
to meet your wife and children”.
13-year-old Kate is a bit dense (she believes that going around the world is like “going from here to the mall a lot of times”), plays saxophone in her school band (but worries how her makeup looks) and plays golf with Peter at Putter World.
Will – the younger and smarter child – seems to exist only to snoop in Kate’s room when she is not home.
