1 9 8 8 – 1 9 8 9 (Australia)
71 x 180 minute episodes
Essentially a rock ‘n’ roll show with a comedy slant, Saturday Morning Live replaced Donnie Sutherland’s long-running Sounds on Australia’s Channel 7 in 1988.
Premiering on Saturday 13 February 1988, the show was hosted by popular madcap radio jocks Jono (Jonathan Coleman) and Dano (Ian Rogerson).
Between the pop clips and the chatter – and segments such as “It’s Rockademic” and “The Rock & Roll Weather Report” – the duo conducted some amusing and informational interviews with international guests such as Elton John, Cheap Trick, Kylie Minogue, Shakespears Sister, and Bros, and local acts including INXS, John Farnham, Peter Blakeley, Spy v Spy, The Hummingbirds, The Hoodoo Gurus, and The Cockroaches.
It was an easy-going format (so easy-going that Jono often turned up in shorts, which was not a pretty sight).
The final show aired on Saturday 16 December 1989.
Jonathan Coleman died on 9 July 2021 after a four-year battle with prostate cancer. He was 65.
