With King Rollo establishing them as a heavyweight in the children’s television market, King Rollo Films created Victor & Maria in 1981, presenting the animated adventures of a young girl and a hat-and-tie-wearing polar bear.
The 26 episodes were not broadcast though until 1983 when they were aired as part of Children’s ITV.
Sharing similar animation techniques to King Rollo – and with the same writer (David McKee), albeit writing under the pen name of Roc Amirall – the series was narrated by Una Stubbs.
The simple five-minute stories showed Victor and Maria preparing for a picnic (and dealing with Victor’s ravenous hunger), trying to put together a DIY project (that Victor can’t find the instructions for) and trying to soothe Victor’s panic that his top hat has been used as a vase.
