This series was set during the American Revolution and aired as part of Walt Disney Presents on ABC. Six episodes were originally commissioned, with a further two filmed in 1961.
Episodes told the heroic story of Francis Marion, an American nicknamed “The Swamp Fox,” as he attempted to thwart British advances in the South by attacking with his force of American irregulars from a lair in the Carolina swamps.
6ft 1in Canadian-born Leslie Nielsen portrayed the (in real life) short and swarthy Marion.
Disney wanted to film the episodes in real southern swamp country, but location scouting turned up so many snakes and other nasty critters that he decided to shoot in California at the Golden Oak ranch 30 miles north of Los Angeles.
