Family Man was rushed on the air by ABC when another replacement comedy – the grotesquely misanthropic The Thorns – dived into the ratings gutter with remarkable speed.
Richard Libertini starred as Shelly Tobin, who wrote comedy scripts for TV shows. He was married to Andrea (Mimi Kennedy), who gave up her career ten years ago to raise her children – 10-year-old Rosie (Alison Sweeney), 7-year-old Josh (Whit Hertford) and 2-year-old Sara (Keeley Marie Gallagher) – and run the household.
Shelly was stepfather to the two oldest of the three children.
Unfortunately, Family Man was scheduled against the second half of Dallas on CBS and Miami Vice on NBC in a ratings battle it could never win. It deserved better than a throw-away Friday night timeslot.
The seven episodes were produced by Universal Television and originally intended for the Fox network, which never picked it up.
