Jackson Beaudine (Victor Garber) was a three-time divorced private investigator who owned Jackson Beaudine Investigations at 1163 Vandover Street in Los Angeles.

Somehow, Jackson and his three ex-wives – Mary (Maggie Cooper), a lawyer with the firm of Maxwell, Cooper and Associates; Liz (Shanna Reed), a reporter for the Los Angeles Chronicle; and Samantha (Teri Copley), an aspiring actress (whose claim to fame was appearing in the horror film Hatchet Honeymoon) – all got along, and occasionally Jackson turned to one or all of them for help with one of his cases, or they called on him to help them.

When Jackson was investigating cases and trying to help people in trouble, he had a knack for asking the wrong questions of the wrong people and constantly putting his life in jeopardy.

Six episodes were produced, but only five episodes were aired during the summer of 1985 (the pilot episode – directed by Bill Bixby – was never aired). Bill Conti composed the theme tune.
