University Hospital in Seattle, Washington, was the setting for a look at the triumphs and tragedies of a group of student nurses struggling to cope with life in this syndicated series from Aaron Spelling.
The prototypically stern Mary Jenkins (Tonya Pinkins) was the head nurse, and her student staff included Megan Peterson (Rebecca Cross) – a wide-eyed innocent from Montana; manipulative man-chasing buxom blonde beauty Tracy Stone (Hudson Leick); Jamie Fuller (Hillary Danner), who was secretly on the lam from a brutish gambler who kept her as his mistress, and Samantha McCormick (Alexandra Wilson), the dedicated descendant of a long line of nurses.
The student nurses lived together and enjoyed conversing about men while wearing bras, panties, and towels. Sam even managed to get half-undressed while in the clutches of a would-be rapist doctor.
Spelling, though, also mixed in a “socially relevant” theme amid the recurring display of cleavage and bare midriffs – best illustrated by a scene in which the four student nurses discussed the issue of sexual harassment while gathered around a whirlpool in their swimsuits.
TV shows produced for syndication normally last two years or more. Anything less is considered a failure. University Hospital is one of the very few to have lasted less than half a year (January to May 1995).
