Sunny-natured Dave Stoller (Shaun Cassidy) – sometimes known to his race buddies as “Dr Jekyll and Mr Ravioli” – has two passions: bicycle racing and all things Neapolitan. Combinations of the two, such as Italian bikes or biking Italians, are best of all.
His buddies are Mike (Tom Wiggin), the athletic one; Cyril (Thom Bray), the wry, cerebral one; and Moocher (Jackie Earle Haley), the practical one who gets physical when anyone calls him “shorty”.
As the four high school grads decide what to do with their lives, only two things are certain: they will stick together, and they will frequently collide with the guys on Fraternity Row.
Dave’s parents, used-car dealer Ray (Vincent Gardenia) and his wife, Evelyn (Barbara Barrie), look on with a mixture of love, concern, exasperation, and the devout hope that an adaptation of an Oscar-winning movie will also pay off as an ABC TV series.
The locals, many of whose fathers worked at the nearby quarries, were derogatorily called “cutters” by the college kids.
Set in Bloomington, Indiana, the series was actually filmed in Athens, Georgia. Only eight episodes were produced before the show was axed. A few episodes were later televised on Mondays to fill the programming gap caused by the baseball players’ strike.
